Learning, Securing and Growing: My LinProfs Internship Experience

Our latest intern Marcos Martin experience:

Over the past few months I did my Internship at LinProfs as part of the internship program of my specialization course of cybersecurity at IES El Rincón in Gran Canaria, after studying Network Computer Systems Administration in the same study centre.

With them I learned about the cloud for the first time. At first it was difficult to know what I needed to do but with time and a little help I started developing a new skill. Within my time using AWS I learned how to create instances with EC2 and virtual networks with VPC.

The instances consisted of a series of different Linux machines with different services, the main instance a web server being secured by three other ones. One of the machines had a Nessus scanner to scan the other instances in search of vulnerabilities, the other one was a Bastion Host to prevent unwanted connections and an Elastic Server to collect logs from the other instances in order to monitor them.

I also practiced hardening the systems with the help of security benchmarks such as Lynis and focusing a lot on securing SSH as it is one of the main entrances to the instances.

Last but not least, I wandered a bit around the compliance world learning about the ISO 27001 and it’s implementation, being something that caught a lot of my interest.

Overall, my internship period was full of learning experiences alongside amazing professionals and gave me a broader view of the world of IT in general. It helped me expand my knowledge and gave me clarity on the path I want to follow in this vast field.
